An upgrade used to be scheduled: you chose the new plan, and the charge and the change came about a day later. In between, it was not clear which plan you were on.

Upgrades

When you upgrade, you now pay the difference straight away, and your plan changes as soon as the payment goes through. The confirmation says Pay now and tells you what the next screen will ask for.

An annual plan above the auto-pay limit is paid directly rather than charged automatically. Its billing page says so, and asks you to renew in the plan's last week.

Add-ons

An add-on now renews together with your plan. Before you pay, Add shows the amount, GST included, up to your plan's renewal date, and what the add-on adds to each renewal after that. On an annual plan, an add-on bought mid-year covers the remaining months at once.
